Architectural wrapping is the biggest opportunity most car wrappers are ignoring
If you can lay a hood without a single line, you already have the hardest skill architectural wrapping asks for. What you probably don't have is a reason to look at it, because nobody in the car world talks about it. Meanwhile there are installers quietly refinishing entire hotel floors with a squeegee, a knife, and a heat gun, and they aren't fighting over the same three cars a week on Instagram.
What architectural film actually is
Architectural film is a self-adhesive finish, usually around 8 mil thick and 48 inches wide, printed and embossed to look like wood, stone, metal, fabric, or a solid color. It goes on dry over an existing surface: a door, a cabinet front, an elevator cab, a column, a reception desk, a wall panel. The surface stays; only what you see changes. Think of it as a laminate you apply on site instead of a wrap you peel off later.
The big names are 3M DI-NOC, Bodaq from Hyundai L&C, and Renuva. They differ in pattern libraries, price, and lead time, but the install logic is the same across all of them: clean, seal if the substrate is porous, dry-apply, post-heat the edges, done.
Why it's easier than a car in some ways, and harder in others
Easier: most surfaces are flat or gently curved. There are no compound curves, no mirror caps, no bumpers with six recesses. You are laying big flat panels and wrapping edges. The film is stiffer than cast vehicle vinyl, which sounds bad until you realize it doesn't stretch and distort the pattern when you don't want it to.
Harder: the room is occupied, the finish has to survive years of cleaning crews, and the seams get inspected up close by someone paying by the square foot. Substrate prep matters more than on a car. Painted MDF, laminate, and sealed drywall are fine. Raw wood, unsealed gypsum, and textured surfaces need sealing first, and if you skip that the film lifts and you own the callback.
Who actually buys this
- Hotels. Guest-room doors, wardrobe fronts, headboard walls, corridor panels. The work is done floor by floor, often overnight, so the property never closes. One door at a time, a lot of doors.
- Elevator companies and property managers. An elevator cab can be refinished in a night. It's one of the most common architectural jobs there is, and it repeats across every building a management company owns.
- Healthcare and offices. Casework, nurse stations, patient-room doors, lobby desks. Places where demolition dust and downtime are not acceptable.
- Retail and restaurants. Fixtures, counters, and feature walls refreshed between seasons or on a rebrand, with the store open the next morning.
- Residential. Kitchen cabinet refacing is the entry point. A kitchen in a day, at a fraction of the cost of new boxes.
The buyer is rarely a car person. It's a general contractor, a facilities manager, an interior designer, or a homeowner who saw a before-and-after. They don't care about brands; they care that the finish matches the sample and the crew shows up when the building is empty. What changes in your kit
Almost nothing, and that's the point. A buffered squeegee for the film face, a firm card for pushing edges, a fresh 30-degree blade every few cuts, a heat gun with real temperature control, isopropyl alcohol, and lint-free cloths. What does change is the material logic. Architectural rolls are wide and long, so a single hotel floor can run to thousands of square feet. You buy the film from an architectural film distributor, not a sign-supply counter. How to get your first job
Start with something you can control. Wrap your own shop's front counter or a set of cabinet doors in a wood or stone finish, photograph it well, and put it in front of the people who already trust you: the body shop next door, the dealership you wrap for, your landlord. Commercial work comes from referrals inside buildings. One well-executed reception desk leads to the conference room, then the doors, then the elevator.
Price it per square foot with prep and edge work as separate lines, get a deposit before you order film, and confirm in writing what "matches the sample" means. Then do exactly what you do on a car: prep like it matters, lay it clean, and post-heat every edge.
The car market is crowded because every wrapper can see it. The buildings around you are mostly untouched because they can't. That's the opportunity.
